This is the thought process that seems to go by whether we jump in and control it or not. Cogito ergo sum, I think therefore I am. Even if Descartes is wrong, it is undeniable that thinking feels a certain way and we do it, we visualize things, remember things, think about words, numbers, sounds, images, and whether these thoughts have tangible cooccurring nerve impulses, they have no lasting substance, yet we can have them, sense them. Time here is measured in processing speed, how fast each bead on the train of thought/abacus of the mind passes by. And space is purely abstract, it is where thoughts happen and is contained in our brains but is as vast as our imaginations.

This domain is the purview of cognitive psychology including social cognition within social psychology.

The theory lumps schizophrenia in this category of psychiatric problems because the description of schizophrenia I have heard describes feeling separate from one’s thought process and the imagination overpowering perception such that people hear the sounds their out-of-control train of thought pulls up. Still, there is overlap in psychiatric disorders and many appear together so synthesism really posits that each self can go awry in ways to cause the major types of psychiatric disorder. Also, the theory suggests cannabinoid agonists would make great antipsychotics.
